Spring is Here and So Many Things to Do!

Spring is here!  If your calendar is like mine it is filled with various activities.  The Thoreau School Road Race is Sunday May 2oth.  This is such a fun event!  I told the kids at school it was like a big block party.  It comes at a great time, as the fourth and fith graders are getting ready to go to the Emerson Track to run the mile.  For those of you that participate in Miles for Smiles, May calendars will be coming home next week.  Field Day is on Tuesday June 5th.

There are also some great opportunities outside of school.  If you have a daughter that plays softball, CCHS Coach Lisa McGloin is running some youth softball clinics.  They will be held on Sunday April 29th (from 2:30-4), Sunday May 6th, Saturday May 12th, Sunday May 20th, and Sunday June 3rd.

The Concord Recreation runs a Hershey Track and Field Clinic on Fridays.  If your child likes running and or throwing events, please consider giving this a try.  Contact Concord Recreation for more details.  Also more details will follow about Slocum Soccer School for girls and Target Soccer Academy for boys.  Both are run by CCHS coaches!

Please continue to help your child to remember sneakers for physical education days!  As the days get nicer many children wear flip-flops and sandals to school.  These are not appropriate for PE.

Thanks,

Beth Murphy

Gymnastics 2012

We have started our gymnastics unit in PE. Kids have been having fun and working hard. So far the students have climbed up the cargo net and across the rockwall. The have also played ping pong and bowling. There have been many forward rolls and there is so much more to come. Coming soon: balance beam, parallel bars, crocodile pit and chocolate factory! I will be attempting to post pictures….wish me luck!

Food Pantry Collection

Many of you may know Lisa Dmerjian, a fourth/fifth grade tutor at our school. Mrs. Dmerjian works at a local food pantry and is collecting items to be distributed before the holidays. If you have a spare can of soup or box of spaghetti or any other non-perishable food item, please consider sending it in to school with your child. The collection box will be outside the gymnasium door.
Thanks so much and happy holidays!

December Events

I can not believe there are only three weeks until vacation.  There is so much going on and so much to do!  In PE classes we are currently playing hockey games.  The kids really love this unit and it is a lot of fun.  We will also be doing a throwing unit before vacation.  I want to make sure our kids are ready for winter snowball fights!  When using an overhand throw, look to see if your child starts sideways and makes an “L shape” with his/her throwing hand.  Then encourage him/her to point, step and look toward the target as they throw the ball.

Hopefully you all received a yellow sheet with before and after school activity listings. I will be offering an after school sports and gymnastics class for students in grades 2-3 on Wednesdays from 3:15-4:15.  I will be offering an after school sports and gymnastics class for students in grades 4-5 on Thursdays from 3:15-4:15.  I will also be offering a before school sports and gymnastics class for grades k-1 on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8:15-8:45.  During the month of December we will play games like hockey and soccer and kickball.  In January and February we will be doing gymnastics!  It should be very fun!

I am also looking to do a “KIds Night Out” for students in grades 2-5.  I am hoping to run this event on December 16th.  This is a very popular event!  Look for a flier with details coming home in your child’s backpack.  These will be sent out by December 9th.

I will not be sending home “Miles for Smiles” calendars during the winter months.  Look for this program to resume in April.  If you happen to find old “Miles for Smiles” calendars around the house, please have your child hand them in ASAP.

Coming in January: Gymnastics!

October is Here…So is Miles for Smiles!

I can’t believe we are well into the month of October.  It has been both a busy and fun month+ in the gymnasium!  Kids have also been working hard for sure.  We have gone over rules, done movement activities, and played some tag games.  We also played the perennial favorite “hospital”.  Some of the tag games we played touched upon the components of fitness and heart health.  The K-2 graders played” Super Hero Fitness”.  Three super heroes named Kid Cardio, Ms. Muscles and Mr. Flex taught the students about the elements of fitness and how kids can stay active and healthy.  The 3-5 graders played “Heart Health Tag”.  They learned the five risk factors to cardiovasular health:  poor nutrition, stress, inactivity, cigarette smoking, and obesity/underweight.

Kindergarten classes come to PE for 1/2 hour twice a week.  Classes in grades 1-5 have PE for 1 hour once a week.  At the beginning of each grade 1-5 class we do wall bars (upper body) and jump rope activities (cardiovascular) for a warm-up.  Kids then jog around the gym for a specified amount of time.  The time has been increased each week and the kids have been increasing their endurance levels since their first PE class.  Soon the k-1st grades will be ready to do a 1/4 mile run on the Thoreau playground.  The 2nd-3rd grades will do a 1/2 mile run.  The 4th-5th grades will go on a field trip to the Emerson Track to complete a mile!  The kids have been working really hard and I am so proud of them!  Some of them may be a little nervous about doing the mile, but believe me they will all be ready!  Please join me in encouraging them to focus on doing their own “personal best” rather than competing with others.

Finally, you should have also received a Miles for Smiles calendar in your child’s backpack.  The point of Miles for Smiles is to encourage children to exercise at least four times a week and to record their activity levels on a calendar.  At the end of the month please have your child return his/her calendar.  Each student who hands in a calendar that indicates s/he exercised four times a week will be rewarded with a small prize.

Coming Soon…Kids Night Out!

Sneakers, Please!

Nice Kicks!

It was great to see so many people at Back to School Night!  Many of you had questions about proper footwear for PE class.  So I am thinking it is very appropriate that I devote this post to sneakers!  First, please check your child’s daily schedule and make sure s/he has sneakers for PE days.  Basically your child should have sneakers that cover the entire foot.  If your child has an open upper (one that does not cover the top of the foot) s/he will be more susceptible to instability and injury.  The best sneakers have laces, zippers and/or velcro to provide a secure fit.  Shoes, boots, sandals and crocs are definitely not appropriate for PE.  Although Merrills cover the entire foot, they are not designed for physical activity.  ”Mary Jane” type shoes or sneakers with an open upper are not designed for physical activity either.  In order to prepare for this post I found myself surfing the net to find some type of article that best exemplified my own thoughts on the importance of wearing proper sneakers for PE.  You might want to read the link found on Cedar School’s (Hanover, MA) PE page: http://sites.google.com/site/cedarschoolpe/sneakers

We do quite a lot of jogging and running in all of our daily PE activities.  If you are like me and have not quite finished your back to school shopping, you might want to consider buying your child a good running sneaker or a cross-trainer.  While you are out stop by Target to see the coolest lunch box around.  It is called the Bobble lunch box and I love it because it is dishwasher-safe!
